About 'kitten for sales'|Simple Tips To Help You Choose The Right Kittens For Sale
My husband and I recently decided to adopt an animal. We had one dog (Sid, a rescue) and one cat (Sam, also a rescue), as well as a stray cat that was dumped in an area where coyotes are plentiful. Tiger (the stray) is definitely an outdoor cat - although he comes in for a snooze on the futon when the weather is inclement. He is affectionate in short bursts, but basically we're his Motel 6 - the place where he can get warm (or cool), dry, watered and fed. We'd picked up strays in the past and, after making sure they fixed and healthy, we just worked with their foibles. Cats, especially. An internet search revealed no regulated shelter in or near our little town, so I decided to search craigslist.com for available animals. We have always eschewed breeders (there are a lot of unscrupulous animal-breeding operations out there) -- shelter animals have had the benefit of an examination (at a minimum) and, frankly, we feel that purchasing from breeders or from people that do not spay their animals simply encourages the behavior. On top of all that, frankly, mutts (whether feline or canine) are generally healthier and more even-tempered. Animals have long been a hot button for many people - how could they not be? One look at a pair of sad brown eyes on a labrador or the bright green ones of a kitten and most folks melt like a marshmallow over a campfire. Many people find themselves bringing home an animal without thinking it through, especially expenses and care needed, such as food, toys, vet bills, pet-proofing the house, and the attention and training their pet needs. Many more fall in love with a kitten or puppy, but don't much like the cat or dog that takes its place six months down the road. That leads to a lot of abandoned, abused or surrendered animals. Before I continue, I will say that I applaud those folks who do their best to rescue abandoned or abused animals and provide them with safe and loving environments while trying to find them a home. I also recognize the cost of animal care, especially vet bills (although that many veterinarians and animal clinics offer heavily discounted (and even free) service to animal shelters in their area). I applaud the efforts of organized rescue organizations as well, although to be perfectly honest, I find some of their requirements cumbersome and their fees quite high. However, this article isn't about regulated shelters or organized rescue organizations. This article is about the one-offs. Much to my surprise, craigslist.com, which has a rele against pet "sales," was awash with available pets. I soon discovered that the way folks were getting around that rule was to call their asking price an "rehoming fee." Moreover, many of the animals listed were from out of state, allegedly "rescued" from kill shelters and (sorry pitbull lovers) most of these were adult pitbull dogs. The process for adopting these animals was filling out an application and paying a "rehoming fee" -- some as high as $300+. I made a few calls and discovered that many of these folks were either (a) people looking to sell pets they no longer wanted; (b) facilitators who had never met the animal, nor was the animal in their home; (c) big on the word "purebred" - as if taking in only high-priced rescues entitled them to higher rehoming fees or (d) self-proclaimed "rescuers" who were adopting animals out of their house or garage. With the facilitators, who were mainly importing animals from the Carolinas, there were transportation fees as well as rehoming fees to be paid after one was "approved" through an application process. There are many pitfalls in adopting through these channels. First and foremost, adopting a pet should not cost as much (or more) than purchasing one from a breeder. Second, and especially with facilitators, you have no idea what kind of pet you're getting -- the information is third-hand (although the word "sweet" is used every other sentence in many of these advertisements) -- and once the animal is imported, you're stuck with it. Third, there is very little recourse other than legal action if one of these private rescuers gives you an animal that doesn't have the attributes advertised or, heaven forbid, an animal that is sick. Bringing a sick animal into your house is the fastest way to get your other pets sick as well. I think it's time that state governments (and municipalities which don't have regulated shelters) take a hard look at this issue. Animal shelters and organized rescue organizations are regulated, so too should these individuals. For one thing, the "rescuer" syndrome can lead to animal hoarding, which leads to neglect and abuse. However, while it's one thing to find a stray and advertise to find a home for it -- it's quite another to find (or import) a number of strays and charge boo-ko bucks in "rehoming" fees. At that point, the rescuer is becoming a profit center. For the record, we ended up adopting our kittens through Common Sense For Animals, a small shelter which has a veterinarian right next door. Our adoption fee for the two kittens was $174, which included a $75 (each) credit toward spaying/neutering, several bags of litter and a few cases of cat food. Our kittens (Thing One and Thing Two) have a 30 day health guarantee, and their medical records (de-worming and vaccines) were handed over when we took them home. They are living up to their names. |
