First               and               foremost,               adopting               a               pet               should               not               cost               as               much               (or               more)               than               purchasing               one               from               a               breeder.

Second,               and               especially               with               facilitators,               you               have               no               idea               what               kind               of               pet               you're               getting               --               the               information               is               third-hand               (although               the               word               "sweet"               is               used               every               other               sentence               in               many               of               these               advertisements)               --               and               once               the               animal               is               imported,               you're               stuck               with               it.

Third,               there               is               very               little               recourse               other               than               legal               action               if               one               of               these               private               rescuers               gives               you               an               animal               that               doesn't               have               the               attributes               advertised               or,               heaven               forbid,               an               animal               that               is               sick.

Bringing               a               sick               animal               into               your               house               is               the               fastest               way               to               get               your               other               pets               sick               as               well.
I               think               it's               time               that               state               governments               (and               municipalities               which               don't               have               regulated               shelters)               take               a               hard               look               at               this               issue.

Animal               shelters               and               organized               rescue               organizations               are               regulated,               so               too               should               these               individuals.

For               one               thing,               the               "rescuer"               syndrome               can               lead               to               animal               hoarding,               which               leads               to               neglect               and               abuse.

However,               while               it's               one               thing               to               find               a               stray               and               advertise               to               find               a               home               for               it               --               it's               quite               another               to               find               (or               import)               a               number               of               strays               and               charge               boo-ko               bucks               in               "rehoming"               fees.

At               that               point,               the               rescuer               is               becoming               a               profit               center.
For               the               record,               we               ended               up               adopting               our               kittens               through               Common               Sense               For               Animals,               a               small               shelter               which               has               a               veterinarian               right               next               door.

Our               adoption               fee               for               the               two               kittens               was               $174,               which               included               a               $75               (each)               credit               toward               spaying/neutering,               several               bags               of               litter               and               a               few               cases               of               cat               food.

Our               kittens               (Thing               One               and               Thing               Two)               have               a               30               day               health               guarantee,               and               their               medical               records               (de-worming               and               vaccines)               were               handed               over               when               we               took               them               home.

They               are               living               up               to               their               names.
