There               are               many               pitfalls               in               adopting               through               these               channels.

First               and               foremost,               adopting               a               pet               should               not               cost               as               much               (or               more)               than               purchasing               one               from               a               breeder.

Animal               shelters               and               organized               rescue               organizations               are               regulated,               so               too               should               these               individuals.

For               one               thing,               the               "rescuer"               syndrome               can               lead               to               animal               hoarding,               which               leads               to               neglect               and               abuse.

However,               while               it's               one               thing               to               find               a               stray               and               advertise               to               find               a               home               for               it               --               it's               quite               another               to               find               (or               import)               a               number               of               strays               and               charge               boo-ko               bucks               in               "rehoming"               fees.

At               that               point,               the               rescuer               is               becoming               a               profit               center.
For               the               record,               we               ended               up               adopting               our               kittens               through               Common               Sense               For               Animals,               a               small               shelter               which               has               a               veterinarian               right               next               door.
